  1. In the UK we regularly refer to coffee and tea as bean soup and leaf soup in a joking not joking way. It’s not even an unusual thing to say or think.
    The bean thing is not confusing. They are called coffee beans, we refer to them that way, so to refer to them conversationally that way is simply standard.
    The tax thing is weird, but that’s just American tax nonsense. Subway did a multi-year lawsuit trying to get their bread reclassified as a cake based on the high sugar content as cakes are taxed lower for sale, so that can be disregarded as something that is not relevant than anyone other than a shareholder in Subway or a tax lawyer.
    P.S – in the UK we have Cup-aSoup, soup designed to be drunk from a cup like a tea or coffee or Bovril. Also soup is not food, it is a liquid. Liquids are drunk not eaten, so soup is a drink not a food.
    Unless you freeze or set a liquid into a solid then eat that solid I guess.
